UP SINGAPORE TEAM MEMBERS
The UP Singapore team is made up of people from around the world, each with a unique skill set and background.
James is a social entrepreneur that works and plays in the space between personal change and social change. He has extensive experience in stimulating social innovation as an event designer, trainer, and consultant. James currently manages UP Singapore’s events and is also involved in three social enterprise startups: an open source personal growth platform, a sustainable fish farm, and a university for 10,000 young Leonardo da Vincis. He moved to Singapore in 2009 because he saw it as a powerhouse in social innovation that could eventually become one of Asia’s Social Silicon Valleys. In time, he hopes to become an “angmohporean”. For more, see www.jamesnorris.org.
John is an unrepentant geek. He loves technology served raw, the nerdier the better. Part coder, part businessman, part visionary and all evangelist, John never misses an opportunity to talk about his passion for technology. John is one of the founders of the BigData.sg and is the resident Big Data Guru for Newton Circus. Besides being passionate about technology, John is passionate about creating communities, systems and environments that empower individuals and drive innovation from the bottom-up. He’s been instrumental in helping build a network of user-generated events and workspaces across SE Asia to enable members of the tech community to share knowledge and collaborate for innovation. Other hobbies and interests include beer.
Laurence is an undergraduate at the NUS School of Computing. A hardcore geek, he is one of the organisers of GeekcampSG, and is active in other groups, including the NUSHackers as well. His passions lie in mainly Big Data and performance, amid other geeky stuff like building random stuff for fun. For more, see geeksphere.net
Paul Othen brings a passion for developing greenfield markets on behalf of companies looking to establish and improve their operations and/or profiles in APAC. From developing market entry strategies, to company setup and pure business development, he loves helping companies navigate the initial difficulties of developing new markets and delivering value for clients. When not in the office, you can find Paul on the basketball court or the golf course trying desperately to fight the natural aging process and to be better than he was the day before.
Edris Boey is a spunky and out-going, unlikely auditor, who left the industry in 2011 to pursue a post-graduate degree in Environmental Management at the National University of Singapore. Sustainability has always been at the back of her mind ever since she had to sort her own waste while living in New Zealand. The tiny Singaporean in a big world wants to bring sustainable and responsible living to Singapore and make it a better place for everyone to live in (the heat is already bad enough!) – hence, UP Singapore.
Having recently graduated from Singapore Management University, Mythreyi is all ready to be a grown up. Maybe. She loves all things social media and is a self-confessed BlackBerry addict. Her other interests include learning new languages, with Japanese and Farsi being next on the hit list. Originally from India, she has been aware of poverty and the need for development from a young age. She believes that these complex issues should be approached with a sustainable future in mind. She hopes to go back home in a few years, having absorbed some wisdom at UP Singapore, and contribute to this mission.
Annabel is an aspiring chef who will be reading Philosophy, Politics and Economics at university this fall. She would like to live in a hole but agrees to come out now and then to work on pertinent social issues like sustainability. Passionate about environmental issues from a young age, Annabel was part of her school’s environmental focus group where she actively promoted environmental causes. In an ideal world, Annabel would like to unite her two passions and create sustainable gourmet food.
Young (Min Young) Sie
Young aspires to be a social entrepreneur and wants to realize his dream of making the world a better place. While the path of a social entrepreneur isn’t easy, Young’s resolve stands firm and he is determined to achieve his dream. But apart from dreaming, Young loves to live each day to the fullest and appreciates the simplicity around him.
Dione is motivated by curiosity and the desire to craft and be in environments where excitement and magic happen. Finding daring new ideas irresistibly attractive, Dione was drawn to the idea of UP with its aims of promoting innovation and building amazing, attractive cities. Among her multiple obsessions, making Singapore a better place has been an enduring pursuit for Dione. She has been involved in civil society advocating the relaxation of censorship rules, raising money for overseas student voters, and overseeing the balloting process last year. Dione is also passionate about personal growth, poetry, and salsa dancing, and hopes to join a dance student performance team. She also looks forward to climbing Aconcagua and entering law school.
Very much like her namesake, Dora loves to explore. Fresh out of junior college, she is a place to explore new possibilities, new challenges, and new passions. UP Singapore is a platform that allows her to discover the amazing ideas and gems springing up (pun intended!) from within the Singaporean community. After that, Dora is looking forward to life in the US this fall when she heads off to pursue a course in Economics.
