We’ve been pretty busy in the two months! A lot has happened and we wanted to keep you up to date. Read more here…
UP SINGAPORE AT THE WORLD CITIES SUMMIT
We exhibited the results of UP at the World Cities Summit from 1st -4th July, visited by over 300 mayors from around the world and 3000 total attendees. The feedback has been incredible and we will be taking the UP experience global this year!
PROTOTYPES FROM UP SINGAPORE
Although many of you came along to City Camp and the Urban Prototyping weekend just for the experience (and we thank you for your support!), a number of the teams from UP are still actively developing their prototypes. We are working with ClimateRight, Gran’Date, Liveliness, Sure Park, iQ, Cab Buddy and Caroperate to secure private sector and government agency co-operation and funding to develop the prototypes into real in-market projects. We hope to share more exciting news on the future of these projects in the coming months.
The VaultStart team have already received $50,000 in funding to take their idea from prototype to project and Fern, the team lead, had this to say about the UP Singapore:
“UP lent me the brains of other participants to thrash out my idea. UP did good by not restricting the type of people that can participate – it allowed perspectives from all angles. It was a very constructive environment for ideas to bloom. I hope UP continues to grow next year. UP can be an important conduit for Singaporeans or people from ASEAN to realise their unfulfilled talents the low risk and fun way, unobstructed by what the society thinks they should do, and open up their horizon to many other possibilities.”
Thanks Fern! and we look forward to telling your story as the VaultStart project gathers steam!
FUTURE OF UP HACKATHONS
We had feedback at the UP Hackathon that there were too many great ideas and data sets to choose from. It’s a good problem to have, but we are addressing it by planning a series of more targeted urban prototyping initiates.
Over the next six months, we are working with both private sector companies and government agencies to schedule a variety of UP-inspired hackathons focusing on energy & environment (November), the empowerment of marginalised women (December) and health (January 2013).
As soon as we have the details and dates confirmed, we will release them to the community. We still have space in our 2013 calendar, so if you have any ideas or suggestions please contact us.
In the meantime, we will be keeping in touch and growing the UP community by taking part in tech, urban and social innovation events around Singapore. We were at both SIX and TechLaunch in September and there will be more to come!
If you would like the UP team to be part of your event, as speakers, mentors or to provide data, please get in touch.
