Smart Retail LAB

The Smart Retail LAB was a satellite event at InnovFest unBound. It was an excellent way to surface some of the issues at play and complement this discussion with an opportunity for organisations to showcase some existing technologies to assist in-store experience, rapidly prototype new ideas and test them in the field. The participants also had the opportunity to network with Singapore business leaders and unBound’s network of international C-level executives.

We saw some great ideas come forth from our 15 participating start-up teams. Four teams got the opportunity to pitch at the Retail Innovation Forum. You can check out their ideas here.



At this 24-hour hack, start-ups were encouraged to build on their existing product / service and were required to present a high=resolution prototype of their solution. Their challenge was the customise their pitch according to the real-life “LAB” environment that is Suntec City, using actual store examples and data, etc in their demonstrations.

To be eligible for the pitch at the Retail Innovation Forum, the hack would need to demonstrate close integration with the Forum content and be seen as a creative response to the challenges and issues discussed at the Forum. Four teams were selected for this pitch to an audience of senior executives.

Of the four finalist teams, Graymatics was fastracked to the Unilever Scale Up Battle finale.

As a Retail LAB participant, you will receive the opportunity to learn during masterclasses (starts at 11.30am) from experts in this space, receive mentoring sessions (2.30pm onwards) from experienced players with a wealth of knowledge and pitch to panel of senior-level judges. Mr Tian is an industry veteran with more than 28 years of IT consulting for Governments and Multinational Enterprises across the Asia Pacific region.

Mr Tian’s industry experience spans sectors in banking, telecommunications, government, healthcare, manufacturing and distribution, where he successfully engaged with clients around optimising the use of technology and human capital to meet business needs and drive. In HutCabb Services, Mr Tian and his team aim to help their Clients create better business opportunities and lend a platform for higher quality of life through Ubiquitous Computing.

Mr Tian is an ex-Board Member of Industry Advisory Council of the School of Computing-NUS as well as an ex-member of the Alumni Advisory Board to the President of NUS. Most recently, in 2014, Mr Tian won the Asia Pacific Entrepreneurship Award (Most Promising Entrepreneur category) by Enterprise Asia.


Mr Ng Kok Siong, Chief Corporate Development Officer, CapitaLand Limited


In this role, he is entrusted with developing corporate systems and processes to drive efficiency and productivity. Mr Ng will provide leadership to strategy and corporate planning as well as business technology and information systems to achieve greater organisational effectiveness. He is a member of CapitaLand’s Executive Management Council.

He currently serves as a Director and Audit Committee member of two REITs; CapitaRetail China Trust Management Limited and CapitaMalls Malaysia REIT Management Sdn. Bhd.


Faith Soh, VP Customer Experience Management of CapitaLand Singapore Limited


Faith Soh is VP, Customer Experience Management of CapitaLand Singapore Limited. With more than 15 years experience in the real estate industry, she has covered operational and management roles in areas including property valuation, marketing and leasing, and asset management prior to her current role.

With a passion for understanding customers’ needs and expectations, Faith leads a team in developing experiential frameworks to shape key customer experiences in the company’s premier commercial buildings. Her team also gathers and analyses customer insights to drive product and service innovations.


Wee Su Lin, VP Corporate Development, CapitaLand


Wee Su Lin is Vice President, Corporate Development at CapitaLand and brings experience from both public and private sectors in a real estate career spanning 13 years across diverse roles in urban design and planning, retail asset management and large scale development management projects.

Su Lin’s deep industry understanding, coupled with a Masters in Architecture, allows her to develop insights across the life cycle of real estate, from macro-level land planning to the development, securitisation, asset management and operational details of a retail assets.

Su Lin believes that innovation is the key to the sustainability and continued growth for the real estate market, and is continuously seeking new ways to build symbiotic business relationships between established brick-and-mortar and cutting edge online solutions.


Peter Miller, Director, Y&R Labstore


Peter was born in Australia and studied Advertising at Sydney College in the early 80’s. Peter has since traveled and worked in Europe, Africa, North America, Asia and Australia and now resides in Singapore where he has been based for over 20 years. Peter’s career spans 35 years in the fields of branding, advertising, communication, marketing; most of this in Asia Pacific, with a particular emphasis on the retail environment.

Peter’s category experience is wide and varied, though mostly focused on FMCG includingF&B, alcohol and tobacco as well as channel and trade marketing specializations from GTRthrough to traditional trade. Peter’s main clients in Asia have been Unilever, Heineken, Nokia, BAT, Diageo ( Johnnie Walker, Smirnoff,), Nestle, Energizer, Schick, 3M to name afew.

During recent years, Peter has consulted for the Singapore Government’s Design Engageprogram and when time permits likes to be on a stage sharing his many brand experiencesin recent years at brand and marketing conferences including Asia Business Review, Brandfest and Brand Loyalty Congress.


Trakomatic showcased their advanced video-analytics technology that turns CCTV cameras into smart sensors. The solution allows retailers to understand in-store shopper behaviour, along with people counting, path tracking, age & gender measurement and people re-identification.


Tapidata presented their NFC-enabled e-receipt system that would help retailers engage with and retain customers. The solution would help retailers connect with customers strategically, before and after they shop, and help lower operational and marketing costs.


Graymatics presented their technology which allows brands and retailers to better understand the preferences and interests of their customers via the image and video content they interact with.
